Yup - I agree but the FDs seem to think that, as with their payroll system (that does prompt them for a password when they open it) that the staff do what they need in one-go and exit the system thus re-protecting data.

I see the authentication only occuring when the assignment is opened up initially.

It's all to do with usage and probably very specific to these payroll type situation.

Once you have typed it in you still have the same problem with locking data after it is displayed. Or do you have to type the password everytime you refresh?

Not to mention, by adding another password you are just increasing the liklihood that you cannot remember all your passwords and they may be written down in an easily accessible location.

I agree that users should lock their workstations but both financial controllers commented that their HR/finance system did not use single sign on thus providing an extra level or authentication that allowed users to be a little slack on locking workstations - A habit that ought to be broken IMO.

I agree there is nothing you can do if data is copied out of Excel and I presume there is nothing the HR/Finance system software vendors can do to protect the source data either.

In both cases we closed the deal so it wasn't a show stopper rather an expectation.

Its really the core workstation physical security that the issue then. I don't know what the PPS product can do to make this more secure.

It seems like you have to train users just like they lock their house/apartment/car doors (if they live in a big city) automatically. Thats the same thing you must do to your workstation. What would the controller's expect PPS to do?

(And then my next followup: what happens when you copy data out of excel and pps where I (pps dev) can't add any code to protect you?)

Yes, all I mean is, with Integrated Security, if someone walks away and does not lock their computer (naughty naughty) then potentially sensitive data can be accessed.

This has been raised by two of our customers (both financial conrollers) hence it's inclusion.

Regards

Surely windows authentication (kerberos) is secure enough.

Or do you mean something along the lines of: if the workstation a user is logged into is not secured then somebody may come along and use that computer?

Yes, you are right, rule parameters are an option – However, one point I failed to mention in my post is that I’m using definition rules; for that ‘instant’ response. If I were to employ rule parameters fed from the Excel Add-In, for example, I could not use a definition rule and this would result in an element of lag before the results are available. Also, it would possibly make comparing the results of two pre-defined what-if’s more difficult.

In my example I only use one member property to provide the factor/variance. In reality this could be a bunch of properties to describe some more complex what-if’s. Parameter entry could then become cumbersome when combined with a variety of different what-if’s.

I agree with your model variable point and relating the factor to the relevant scenario member and I guess that is the crux of the problem, and probably why I decided to go with a member property so I could use the natural relationship.

Thanks for your comments, always most welcome !!
